To pursue a BCA programme, one needs to not have Physics, Chemistry, and Maths as subjects in Class 12th class. An Arts or Commerce student can join the course as well.

BCA Course: Eligibility Criteria

  • An aspirant should have passed 10+2 in any stream with English with minimum 45 percent marks in aggregate. (The pass percentage might vary from college to college.)
  • A student with an Arts or Commerce background, too, can also apply.
  • While some colleges/universities admit aspirants on a merit basis, the other colleges/universities admit students based on personal interview and written examination.
  • Some universities conduct their entrance test as well.

DCA course eligibility

  • Students aspiring to pursue Diploma in Computer Applications (DCA) course must have completed their higher school/ 10 + 2 from a recognized board.

MCA programme: Eligibility Criteria

According to AICTE, an MCA course has the following pre-requisites:

  • Aspirants must have a BCA/BSc/ BCom/BA degree with Mathematics as one of the subjects at 10+2 level or graduation.

However, MCA colleges in India might ask you to fulfill the following as well:

  • Aspirants need to be an Indian National. Foreign nationals/Non-Resident Indians may or may not be eligible to apply under the Foreign/NRI Category.
  • Aspirants must have obtained a bachelor’s degree in Computer Applications, Computer Science or Information Technology.
  • Minimum marks required: 50% to 60% (a CGPA above 6/10 is considered good) in Bachelor’s; 55% and above in Class 12th. Class 10th marks do not matter in most cases.

Main Difference

CSE: Computer science engineers are involved in many aspects of computing, from the design of individual microprocessors, personal computers and supercomputers to circuit designing and writing software that powers them.
IT:  Information Technology deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to store, protect process, transmit and securely retrieve data. IT professionals perform a variety of tasks that range from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and information databases. Full form of ME is Master of Engineering and that of MTech is Master of Technology. MTech is a professional postgraduate engineering master degree programme awarded to candidates after completion of two years of study in the discipline of engineering. This degree is predicated in a specific branch of engineering. In India, the ME/MTech degree is offered across various specializations. These specializations include Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, VLSI, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering etc.

This degree course is offered under the following categories

This master degree programme is also receptive to working diploma holders or diploma holders having work experience for specified period. In India, this master degree is regulated under the aegis of University Grants Commission of India (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and National Board of Accreditation (NBA). Admissions to ME/MTech programmes offered by technical colleges and universities in India is made through a National level/State-level/Institute-level engineering entrance examination.

Difference between ME and MTech

As mentioned above, ME stands for Master of Engineering while MTech stands for Master of Technology. The key difference between these two degrees is in terms of their practical impact, course material and orientation.

M.E. is known as Masters of Engineering M.Tech. is known as Masters of Technology.
M.E. is more of a knowledge oriented. M.Tech. is more of a skill oriented.
M.E. is usually designed for students who plan for employment upon graduation and who are already in the engineering workforce. M.Tech. is designed to produce Research Engineers who can get the position of “Technologist” in the industries and research institutes.
M.E. emphasizes on in-depth concept clarification of facts. M.Tech. emphasizes on practical exposure of conceptual knowledge.
M.E. is mostly preferred by private universities or self-affiliated colleges. For instance IIT. M.Tech. is offered by colleges affiliated by various universities.
M.E. is conventional term used for majorly theory based study. M.Tech. involves use of technology and other aided stuff.

Eligibility Criteria for ME/MTech

The basic eligibility requirement for admission to ME/MTech programme is:
  • Candidates who have completed their BE/BTechdegree with a valid score in GATE are eligible for ME/MTech degree course.
  • Candidates who have completed a 5-year program in Science or Applied Sciences resulting in the award of a Master of Science degree are also eligible for Master of Engineering course.
  • Admission is based on rank obtained in the entrance test conducted for ME./MTech.

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE): Entrance Exam for MTech

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or populalrly known as GATE is a national-level engineering exam condcuted every year for admission to postgraduate and doctorate level courses at IITsNITs and IIITs. The exam is jointly conducted by seven IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. Various government and private institutions across the country accept the GATE score for admission to their MTech programmes. Moreover, Public Sector Units (PSUs) also recruit engineers through GATE. In 2020, GATE will be organised by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in online mode on February 1, 2, 8 and 9. GATE 2020 will be conducted in 25 papers including the newly added subject, Biomedical EngineeringApplication forms for GATE 2020 will be available from September 3, 2019 and the last date to apply for the same is September 24. GATE scores will be valid for a period of three years from the date of the release of the GATE 2020 result i.e. March 16.
